Dr O'Connell is an archaeological scientist who has taken a leading role in the development and application of isotope studies in archaeology. Her research traces signals of diet and climate in human and animal tissues, using light element stable isotopic analysis. It focuses on probing the fundamental tenets and assumptions of this technique, as well as its applications. She has published widely in scientific and archaeological journals.
