Grounds for election
James Clark has an international profile as an historian of religion, culture and intellectual life in later medieval and Reformation England. He has made a leading contribution to knowledge and understanding of the religious orders between the Black Death and the Break with Rome. He has published eight books and more than thirty articles on a wide range of themes from chronicles to classicism, early printing to the place of friaries in provincial towns. His most recent book, The Dissolution of the Monasteries. A New History (Yale, 2021) has been widely acclaimed. His research has attracted diverse funding awards from AHRC and Leverhulme to the Marc Fitch Fund and the National Trust. His collaborations with heritage churches and trusts have resulted in exhibitions and publications for Buckland Abbey, Glastonbury Abbey Trust, Gloucester Cathedral, St Albans Cathedral, Tewkesbury Abbey and Westminster Abbey. He was elected fellow of the Royal Historical Society in 2008.
