Grounds for election
Otto Saumarez-Smith has, in a short time, shown himself to be an architectural historian of insight and acuity. His first book, 'Boom Cities, Architect Planners and the Politics of Radical Renewal in 1960s Britain' (OUP, 2019) was widely reviewed, named as a 'History Today' book of 2019 and shortlisted for the SAHGB's Alice Davis Hitchcock Medallion. Following his PhD, he was Shuffrey Junior Research Fellow at Lincoln College, Oxford (2014-18) and a member of the University’s History Faculty. In 2018 he joined the the Cambridge University History Faculty while working as a Project Curator at theRIBA Drawings Collection; in 2019 he became an Assistant Professor at Warwick University. He has published peer-reviewed articles in ‘Urban History’ (2020), ‘History Workshop Journal’ (2019), ‘Twentieth Century British History’ (2016), ‘Historical Journal’ (2015) and ‘Architectural History’ (2014, 2012). In 2011 he won the SAHGB’s Hawksmoor Essay Medal. He is now a Trustee of the C20 Society.
