Mitchell has over 25 years experience as an archaeologist working on projects in the UK, Italy and Israel. Mitchell joined English Heritage in 2002, and as part of the landscape investigation team undertook numerous earthwork surveys, a number of which were published in the EH Archaeological Investigation Report Series. Mitchell joined West Yorkshire Archaeology Service in 2005, managing a wide range of archaeological projects, with work published in Medieval Archaeology, Northern Archaeology, Landscapes, and the CBA Forum journal. He also authored a chapter in the 2016 publication Hillforts of the Cheshire Ridge based on his own survey work and has written booklets on the archaeology of Doncaster and Roman Castleford. Mitchell was involved with the organisation of the York Roman Festival, organised a large community excavation at York Guildhall, and community-led surveys of the Stiperstones, Shropshire, amongst others. He is now Director of Archaeology and Heritage at Lanpro Services.
