Grounds for election
James has made a major contribution to archaeology, especially local government archaeology in England, principally as Worcester City Archaeological Officer for 25 years before retiring from the post in 2021. In that post he managed the creation of an Urban Archaeological Database and Historic Environment Record and oversaw major archaeological excavations in the City including at The Hive and Newport Street. From 1982–1996 he worked at Hereford and Worcester Worcestershire Archaeological Service, project managing major surveys, e.g. Marches Uplands, and post-excavation programmes. He worked for Cadw on numerous Guardianship sites, including excavations at Dyfi Furnace. He is currently acting archaeological consultant for Worcester Cathedral and advises local authorities on archaeological policy and strategy. He has supported the wider profession as a former ALGAO UK Vice Chair, and as Chair and long-standing lecture programme-organiser of the Worcestershire Archaeological Society.
