Grounds for election
Emma has been part of the UNESCO Chair in Cultural Property Protection (CPP) & Peace team at Newcastle University since 2017. Her work focusses on developing: the Blue Shield Movement; ways to support the military and governments to safeguard heritage during peace and to promote respect for it during and after conflict; and the implementation of national and international CPP law. She has extensive experience in remote sensing and analysis of geo-spatial heritage site data, specialising in the Middle East. This has led her to work closely with e.g., UNITAR-UNOSAT (UN satellite imagery team), NATO, UNESCO, the ICRC, and many national militaries. She teaches CPP to students and professionals internationally, and has published widely on CPP academically and in several public outlets, including a briefing paper for the 2018 NATO Summit on CPP and (with Paul Fox) editing Safeguarding Cultural Property in the 1954 Hague Convention (2022). She is an Associate of the Higher Education Academy.
