Grounds for election

Dr Penny Bickle’s work explores Neolithic Europe. Working at the intersection of science and theoretical archaeology, she applies bioarchaeological methods to various sites and time periods to inform on issues of identity and social diversity. She is particularly interested in how we can use burial practices to uncover the social lives and lifeways of the earliest farmers in Europe and has engaged persistently and persuasively with themes of social inequality and difference, drawing on detailed scientific analysis and fine-scale chronologies to challenge some of the foundational assumptions about the roots of contemporary systems of inequality. She has also developed broader conversations about difference, wealth and gender, with which she has reached out to an interdisciplinary audience.
