He has published widely on 16th- and 17th-century cultural history (of London and the regions), including an award-winning essay on bowling alleys; articles in English Historical Review and Historical Journal; an edited collection on pre-modern ephemera; and two books, the latest of which, What is a Playhouse? England at Play, 1520-1620, was deemed a “theatre history gamechanger” by Prof. Emma Smith.
Callan’s work is rooted in collaboration, including a forthcoming reconstructed virtual-reality parlour room and archaeological partnerships. He is academic consultant for Shoreditch’s Museum of Shakespeare project and editor of the Curtain playhouse records for REED Online.
