Grounds for election
Dr Makin is an internationally renowned textile archaeologist, specialising in the early medieval English textiles. Her work focuses on the analysis of early medieval embroidery and its role within early medieval societies, bringing attention to it and its importance and relevance in the past and today through lectures, practical workshops, TV and radio appearances, interviews in newspapers. She trained at the Royal School of Needlework and at the University of Manchester. Her book, The Lost Art of the Anglo-Saxon World: the sacred and secular power of embroidery (2019) is a groundbreaking study which combines close technical study of the surviving fragments of Anglo-Saxon embroidery with analysis of the social context of their production. She is currently post-doctoral research associate on the Unwrapping the Galloway Hoard project, University of Glasgow and a member of the Bayeux Tapestry Research Working Group.
