Grounds for election

Prof Johnson is President of the Australian and New Zealand Shakespeare Association and a member of the editorial boards of Early Theatre and Shakespeare. His work on early modern theatres and playing business seeks innovative, interdisciplinary solutions and connects with archaeologists, climate scientists and historians, and cultural and literary scholars to understand the past and its impact on the present. His publications include Shakespeare’s Lost Playhouse: Eleven Days at Newington Butts (Routledge 2018) and Playhouses and Performances, The Arden Handbook of Shakespeare and Early Modern Drama (Dowd & Rutter eds., Bloomsbury 2022). His next book, on Leicester’s Men (CUP, 2023) features archival discoveries including an unknown Elizabethan player and recovery of parish records. Currently he has consultancy role with the developers of a publicly accessible exhibition and performance space on the archaeological remains of the Curtain playhouse, Shoreditch.
