Grounds for election
Ann French is a distinguished conservator & collections historian whose work joins the study of material culture, archival practice, gender and the history of collecting. Joint-winner of the Jerwood Award for Conservation for work on the Othery Cope, she is Collections Care Manager/Conservator (Textiles) at The Whitworth, Manchester. Her wide range of professional offices includes secretary of the Scottish Society for Conservation & Restoration. Her current research on early-20th c Greek Embroidery Collections includes cataloguing associated archives, highlighting the role of Mediterranean archaeologists in categorising motifs and techniques in 18th-20th c textiles purchased during their travels, an analytical practice interconnected with wider European questions of periodisation and taxonomy. She has lectured and published widely, with a monograph in preparation: Untangling and unpicking: The Greek embroidery collecting and collections of Alan Wace and Richard MacGillivray Dawkins.
