Dr Tim Underhill pursued as career in examinations and assessment but also developed an interest and subsequently expertise in deciphering and palaeography of early modern British shorthand. In that role he has written widely on early modern shorthand and is the acknowledged world expert on Byrom's shorthand system. He has published widely in the field including the section on Samuel Pepys’s shorthand collections for Catalogue of the Pepys Library at Magdalene College Cambridge Supplementary Series volume 2. In addition to more than a dozen articles in academic journals on palaeography and shorthand he is also volunteer editor for Book Owners Online. He has spoken and lectured extensively on the subject of eighteenth century shorthand, including at Lincoln College, Oxford and the University of Hamburg. He has also contributed to the 'decoding Dickens' symposium at the University of Leicester.
