Sinclair Bell’s postgraduate and subsequent research has centred on classical art, material culture and the social history of Etruscan Italy and the Roman Empire, with particular interest in the representation of sport (especially chariot racing and charioteers, the subject of his PhD thesis), children and the family, slaves and freed slaves, and the representation of race. The evidence he draws on includes portraits and funerary monuments in scattered collections and museums. He has published numerous articles and chapters (c. 100) on these topics and has been a co-editor of several collected works. A book-length study of Roman chariot racing is in press (publication in 2023), and he is currently at work on book-length studies on archaeological approaches to ethnicity in the Roman empire (due 2024) and ‘Aethiopians’ in Roman art and society (2025). He has received support for his research from numerous organisations, including the Rome Prize from the American Academy in Rome.
