Professor Hamilton Bryson is a distinguished historian of English and American law, specializing in (though not confined to) the early modern period. His doctoral thesis was awarded the Yorke Prize by Cambridge University's Law Faculty in 1973 and published as The Equity Side of the Exchequer in 1975. His subsequent publications have included a valuable Dictionary of Sigla and Abbreviations to and in Law Books (1975, 2nd edition 1996) and biographical and bibliographical writings, as well as entries in both Oxford DNB and the American National Biography. But his most considerable contribution to learning has consisted of numerous collections, impeccably edited, of law reports and court records, especially two volumes of Cases concerning Equity published by the Selden Society in 2001. The wide range of activities these cover give them value to more than legal historians, illustrating as they do such issues as marriages, wills, almshouses, and the upkeep of bridges and roads.
