Grounds for election
Sadi Maréchal is the Professor of Roman Mediterranean Archaeology at Ghent University (Belgium). His research focuses on Roman architecture, and its role in structuring social behaviour. Before becoming Professor in Ghent, Maréchal spent time as a researcher at the Academia Belgica in Rome, was a visiting scholar at the Centre for the Study of Classical Architecture and the Faculty of Classics at the University of Cambridge, and a guest lecturer in Uppsala. He has published widely on his subject, including two monographs (Public Baths and Bathing Habits in Late Antiquity, Brill 2020 and Bathing at the Edge of the Roman Empire, Brepols 2023), and is the recipient of a Science Communication Award from the Royal Flemish Academy. Maréchal has been part of a number of international research teams, he is currently co-director of fieldwork at the Baths of the Christian Basilica in Ostia and the survey of Amiternum (Italy), and a member of the French Archaeological Mission in Libya.
