Grounds for election

Alice Roberts is Professor of Public Engagement in Science at the University of Birmingham, and a bioanthropologist, author and broadcaster with a strong focus on archaeology and the human past. Over her 25-year long career in TV, and through books and public lectures, she has played a key role in communicating archaeological research to wide audiences and has received eight honorary doctorates. She has presented major television series including The Incredible Human Journey, Origins of Us and Digging for Britain (BBC Two) through to Roman Empire by Train (Channel 4). Her books focus on the origin and spread of both species and ideas, archaeogenetics, and the interplay between demographic and cultural processes. Her bestselling trilogy Ancestors (2021), Buried (2023) and Crypt (2024) told the story of Britain from prehistory to the modern era, through the lens of burial archaeology. Through her scholarship and broadcasting, she continues to shape public understanding of archaeology.
