Grinke has had a long and varied career, as a journalist and art critic (Apollo Magazine, 1964-5; Financial Times, 1965-7; Spectator, 1966-9) and antiquarian bookseller (independent, 1968-85, and 2003-23, and as a director of Bernard Quaritch Ltd., 1985-2003). He is a serious bibliographic scholar with publications on e.g. the books of the antiquaries John Ives and Thomas Martin and the lost play-collections of Viscount Conway and Ralph Sheldon, in the TLS, The Library and elsewhere, and one specifically on the Renaissance Wunderkammer, as well as many reviews.
